Vietnam, Germany closes deal on building German House

Thursday, 14 March, 2013

Vietnam and Germany reached Wednesday an agreement on developing a “German House” (Deutsches Haus) in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, which will accommodate the German Consulate General, according to a press release issued Thursday by the German Embassy in Hanoi.

The signing ceremony in Berlin was attended by German Minister of State Cornelia Pieper, Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Nguyen Thi Hoang Anh, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, and Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.

Westerwelle said that the agreement, whose clauses are about the design, building, and operation of the house, is an important milestone in the strategic relationship between Vietnam and Germany, and that the house construction indicates the latter’s efforts to bolster its presence in fast-growing Southeast Asia.

The two nations first signed a deal on this project in Hanoi in 2011 whereby the Vietnamese government allowed its German counterpart to use a land plot in District 1 for constructing the German House.

The facility is intended to also house German businesses, economic agencies, and cultural and scientific organizations.
