Deutsches Haus Ho Chi Minh City is the lighthouse project of Germany in Vietnam and for the ASEAN region and symbol of the strategic partnership and friendship between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In October 2011, Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed the so-called “Hanoi Declaration”. This established a strategic partnership between Germany and Vietnam that is designed to strengthen political, economic and cultural relations and development cooperation.

Germany is since more than 5 years Vietnam’s biggest trade partner in the European Union with a trade volume of 7,5 Billion EURO in 2013. Vietnam and Germany have built a long-term trade cooperation relationship with supplementary economic structures. Germany is also the main hub for Vietnamese products to be exported to European markets, while Vietnam becomes with the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement the key partner for Germany in terms of economic development and trade within the ASEAN region and the new ASEAN Economic Community AEC.

With over 600 million people, ASEAN's potential market is larger than the European Union or North America, next to the People's Republic of China and India.
